The Amazing Accent Wall

The Amazing Accent Wall

Hello all!  Today, I thought I’d share with you some ideas for one of my favorite things – the accent wall.  I am a sucker for older homes with exposed brick, but we can’t all be so lucky to move right into a home with character.  Sometimes it takes some work to give the home some texture and color!  An accent wall is a great way to give your home some personality.  Whether you are a homeowner and are looking for a long term pop of color or if you are renting and don’t want to have to repaint the entire place when your lease runs out, an accent wall is an easy fix for the bland!

I suppose that we can start with the bathroom first.  A great way to spruce up the main for bath is to add an accent wall.  Your guests will instantly be jealous of your creative eye, and this I promise!

I love this wooden accent wall!  With color, pattern, and texture, this bathroom went from just plain boring to striking.  This may be a little more intensive than throwing on a coat of paint, but it is definitely a very charming twist that may be worth your while.  Or better yet, just make your man do it!

This is another little main floor guest bath that was spruced up.  You can use wall paper or stencils and give the space some elegance.

If you are going for a more casual look, horizontal stripes are always great and very easy!  Just grab yourself some painters tape for a job that will probably only take 3 hours and make a dividing wall really POP.

Now onto some fireplaces!  Now I love a great fireplace that is the center of the room and draws attention while also being a great functional aspect, keeping you warm.  Well, I figure if you are going to cozy up to a fire, you might as well have something beautiful to look at!

As a graduate of Virginia Tech,  I love my maroon and orange.  he only problem is that I find orange too bright and too strong.  However, I never considered the color paired with some dark woods and beautiful woodwork!  HouseBeautiful has found someone who can take my beloved orange and make it look sophisticated and warm.

I love this clean look.  Cream walls, white trim, crown molding, and a gorgeous filigree fireplace from floor to ceiling.  This is a great way to keep your older home looking modern, yet elegant.

Another great way to use an accent wall is to define a space.  This accent wall helps to make the breakfast nook feel like it is its own little room, although it is actually open to the kitchen and is a very small space.

And now onto the bedroom!

I have always wanted an accent wall behind my bed, but I haven’t ever gotten to it.  Luckily, Jenn made a gorgeous mirror with book pages fanned out around and that takes up all the space above my head and creating a wonderful centerpiece (you can order these on her etsy site!)  Still, I am always in envy of the accent wall that replaces a headboard.

I was dazzled by this look!  With the black and white, it looks so fresh and clean!  All you need is a stencil, some painters tape, and the courage to paint a wall black :)

Here is another wooden accent wall just like the bathroom pictured earlier.  If I ever wanted continuity between the rooms in my house, I think this would be it.  Wooden accent walls in the bedrooms and bathrooms would be a great way to give a home character and warmth, as well as allowing you to change the wall colors if you get bored!  I’m not so sure about the built-in bed, but the wall is lovely.

Now this is a great idea if you frequent the Habitat for Humanity Home Store.  I went there shopping for craft ideas with my father and we found HUNDREDS of these old shutters.  Just post them up behind your bed for a vintage – chic look with a rustic twist.  Or you can paint them (pull out that spray paint!) for a more modern feel, although you can always weatherize them if you want a particular color with the worn- in feel.

You may just want a single color wall for a bright pop to a room, or you may want a pattern.  Now these patterns look hard, but they are relatively easy to do on your own.

The Chalkboard Wall

All you need for this is a can of chalkboard paint, and then you can make your own patterns and designs depending on the seasons!  Plus the kids will love adding to your home!

Believe it or not, the above wall was made using decals you can order on the internet.  Just click the pic for a link to the site!

This pic has a link to a wonderful painted wallpaper tutorial that you can do on your own using homemade stencils.  It is super easy and she even has the kiddos helping!

One thing about the accent wall idea that I love – YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAINT!  You can create an accent wall with decor items and never lift a brush.  Just some family photos or art work in an interesting design can add all the elements you may want – color, pattern, and texture – to add character if you don’t have a flair for the hardware.

Ok everyone!  This is it for the day and I hope you enjoyed the array of accent wall ideas!

Have a wonderful day readers!
